SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING ORANGE
COUNTY
BASICS OF SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING - 2nd STEP
As of now, you should have found your keywords and should
be ready to optimize your website for your keywords and phrases.
The following is a break down of some of the items you need
to employ with respect to search engine optimization:
Header Tags - Search
Engine Optimization
In the HTML code at the top of your site, there is an area
between the header tags for your Title of your site and for
placing metatags. Google and Yahoo! both analyze the Title
tags whereas Yahoo! places more emphasis on the metatags than
Google.
How do you know if your site already has tags in it? Go to
your site in Internet Explorer and go to the top of the browser.
Select "View" and in the dropdown menu, select "Source."
You should get a popup window in notepad with your web site
in HTML code. To locate your tags, just look below the title
tags and look for something like:
- <meta name="keywords" - keywords...
- <meta name="description" - description....
If neither of these tags are in that notepad text, then your
site most likely does not have metatags. If your site does
have metatags, you need to review whether or not your chosen
keywords or phrases are included. If not, you need to get
those keywords there in order for your search engine
optimization to be successful.
The <title> tag should include at least 2-3 of your
most important keyword and phrases. The metatags should also
include your keywords and phrases. Search engine placement
starts with this step.
Body Tags - Search Engine Placement
Once you have successfully configured your head tags and
added Title tags and Metatags, you need to look at the body
of your text. Going back to the software from Softnik, you
should select the option from the software that says "Web
Page Explorer". This part of the software will tell you
how internet explorer sees your site.
WIthin the body of your website, the search engines are looking
for text that stands out from the rest and do those words
include your targeted keywords and phrases. The HTML tags
the engines are looking for are <h1> and <h2>
tags. You need to have these in the body of your site and
they need to include your keywords and phrases.

the page <h1>The best Orange County Auto Repair

Alt Tags - Search Engine Placement
When an image is placed on a page, there is a spot where
you can explain what that image is. This tag is called an
<alt> tag. You can scroll over any image on the internet,
and if there is an <alt> tag, as you hold your mouse
over the image, a description of the image should appear.
You should make sure that the Alt tags in your
web site include your keywords and phrases that you are targeting.
DIRECTORY
LISTINGS
For Yahoo! ranking, it is better to be listed
in the Yahoo! directory for search engine placement. To be
included in the directory is a little pricey at $299 PER YEAR,
but it allows your site to get indexed in approximately 7
days.
The link to the directory is: http://dir.yahoo.com/.
Find the category your site most fits with and then you can
submit your site. There is a free submission, but it takes
upwards of 8 weeks and does not guarantee that your site will
even get approved and included in the directory. To submit
for the free submission, you need to find the category your
site fits and click on "Suggest a site" located
at the top of the page. The following is a link you may use
